With the recent GTA VI leaks getting the fans excited, fans of the series started reminiscing about how funny some of the earlier installments were. While some games are known for their groundbreaking graphics, game mechanics, or storylines, some games are also remembered for being incredibly funny.

Making a video game that is both funny and entertaining to play at the same time can be incredibly tricky; it is very easy to cross the line into "cringe" or "tacky" while trying to make the game funny. Sometimes developers intentionally make their games funny, while some games turn out to be unintentionally funny.

Goat Simulator

There are some games where the basic premise is inherently funny. For people who haven't even played Goat Simulator can imagine how absurd the game will actually be.

Reddit user Le_Castle_Vania says that games such as Goat Simulator seem like they were created with the intention of "Trying to be as funny as possible." The mechanics of the game and the outrageous things that players are able to do is not only funny to play but incredibly funny to even watch.

Grand Theft Auto IV

Grand Theft Auto doesn't seem funny at first glance, as it's one of the more series entries in the storied franchise. However, in addition to being highly entertaining, GTA IV does have incredibly funny moments as well. The well-written characters and the conversations between them can leave fans laughing on the ground.

Reddit user Le_Castle_Vania says that GTA IV is "The closest we will get to a Guy Ritchie video game". Guy Ritchie is known for the quippy and outrageous dialogues between his characters. GTA IV has also given fans numerous memes which have stood the test of time. GTA IV also happens to be one of the best-selling video games of all time.

Portal 2

Some games, conceptually, have no right to be as funny as they turned out to be. Portal 2's entire premise was that of a puzzle-solving game, which can be very dry most of the time. But the incredible writing of Portal 2 made it one of the funniest games out there.

Reddit user hanebuch says that Portal 2 "Offered a hilarious script." Some monologues like "Smooth Jazz will be deployed in 3,2,1.." turned out to be funny in every language the game was translated to. These dialogues may not seem funny at the surface, but the timing and the delivery in the game made them absolute gems.

Secret Of Monkey Island

Older games with much simpler mechanics and basic graphics can have a really hard time being funny. But Secret Of Monkey Island, published by Lucasfilm games, knocked it out of the park. The simple point-and-click mechanics had some brilliant writing full of sarcastic quips and intentional pauses that influenced a generation's sense of humor. Because of the simple mechanics, it is one of those games where player choices matter a lot.

Reddit user Finder_ feels that Secret Of Monkey Island was so funny because "Of the pauses between dialogues and payoff punchlines." One simple example is when players would click on "Walk" and "To the Sun," the game cleverly and sarcastically says, "Sure! let's walk to the Sun".

West Of Loathing

West Of Loathing is the classic example of not judging a book by its cover, from the outside, the game looks like a boring stick figure RPG, but once people start playing it, not only is the game very entertaining, but it is also hilarious. The writing in the game has often been compared to that of Portal 2.

Reddit user QuestioningLogic says that the game "Made me crack up multiple times." The stick figure animation is really well done, and the clever writing is something that catches players off guard.

JazzPunk is one of the most underrated and overlooked games in recent times. Not only was the adventure storyline quite intriguing, but the art style was also quite refreshing. Most of all, however, players enjoyed the absurdly funny moments spread out throughout the game. The protagonist also had a great backstory which added depth to the character as well.

Reddit user childofthefall says that the game "Had me on the floor wheezing." Moments like giving a guy food poisoning just so he could excrete his liver and after stealing it, the guy wishing the player the best of luck will crack anyone up.

Disco Elysium

For a role-playing game with almost no combat and only dialogues and detective skills, it is surprising how funny it turned out to be. Disco Elysium has gained a cult status among indie gamers, not only because of the intriguing mystery that players have to solve but also because of the well-written jokes embedded within the dialogues.

Reddit user Bojake110 says that DiscoElysium "Is the funniest game I have ever played." Fans also liked the fact that the game did not resort to cringy pop culture references for humor, and the one time they did use such references, it caught players so off guard that it turned out to be funny.

Some games are built with the intention of just being funny. Octodad as a concept of an octopus disguised as a father is inherently funny but the game mechanics made it one of the funniest games to play, especially with friends. Octodad had one of the funniest protagonists in video games.

Reddit user DankZXRwoolies says that "The glitches and physics engine alone is enough." Playing the game with three other people leads to each person controlling one tentacle, and the resulting coordination will leave players rolling on the ground. Even the glitches in the game just made it funnier.

Eat Lead: The Return Of Matt Hazard

Eat Lead: The Return Of Matt Hazard took an interesting and unique approach to its gameplay which is also surprisingly funny. Some game mechanics and elements could have been seen as lazy or gimmicky, but the execution made them pure gold.

Reddit user Nawara_Ven says that the game "Manages to make the game elements itself the jokes." The game does not rely on dialogue, writing, or funny quips to be funny. For example, one of the boss battles involves a player fighting with a "cloud," the boss cannot move across the screen, and he can only speak through text boxes.

Genital Jousting

Genital Jousting is the kind of game where the name explains it all. It is indeed about penises jousting with one another. The main attraction of the game is the multiplayer mode that can be played with up to 8 players, but, surprisingly, there is also a story mode that sees protagonist "John" trying to find a date for his high school reunion.

Reddit user GonkWilCock says that the developers "Actually put a lot of work into it, " and the user also enjoyed the narration of the single-player mode.
