Mortal Kombat is one of the most prolific video game series of all time, as not only are there so many video games in the franchise, but it just recently celebrated its 30th anniversary too. However, while the series might be prolific, fans are impatiently waiting for Mortal Kombat 12, which has seemingly been in development for years at this point.

While there have been many leaks and rumors about the twelfth installment, nothing is official. But until then, all fans can do is replay old games and create some hilarious memes. Between looking fondly back at the old games, making fun of the forgotten spin-offs, and comparing it to the MCU, the franchise has so much meme potential.

The Fatality Golden Ticket

Long before the internet existed, players had to figure out for themselves which combination of buttons triggered the most brutal fatalities. And each character had wildly different combinations. Either that or players had to purchase a guidebook to tell them what's free information and just a couple of clicks away in today's world.

Gamers often had a pen and paper at the ready to write down any number of button-mashing combinations, and they were often folded up and tucked neatly into the video game's box, something else that players know very little about today. Either way, players were nothing without that scrap paper, and they'd never discover some of Mortal Kombat's best fatalities.

Lui Kang And Kung Lao Are Best Friends

Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is one of the best games in the franchise, especially given that it's arguably the most story-driven of them all. But most of all, it sees a great friendship unfold between two fan-favorite characters, Lui Kang and Kung Lao.

When it comes to friendships in video games, Uncharted's Nate and Sully are up there, and Mario and Luigi are friendship goals, but Lui and Kung make each other stronger and work better as a team. Fans love the bromance so much that Shaolin Monks should be a spin-off movie. Given that Warner Bros. isn't just developing a Mortal Kombat 2 but several films in the series, Shaolin Monks would be a great spin-off choice.

Mileena Has No Friends

This meme draws attention to one of the most lonely characters in the video game franchise, Mileena. Mileena isn't exactly the most likable character in the series, and she's very much on her own in the video games. Where characters might link up, like the aforementioned Kung Lao and Liu Kang, Mileena is often left on her lonesome.

Not only that, but she had a vulgar and morbid end in the newly released movie too, so it's almost as if Warner Bros. knew that it couldn't do much with the character in the future. She isn't even on the best of terms with her family. While Kitana has so many relationships in Mortal Kombat, she is also a relative of Mileena, but neither of them like the other very much.

Predicting The Future

Just as fans think The Simpsons creator Matt Groenig is a time traveler, the same could be said for Ed Boon, who created the iconic beat 'em-up series. This meme hilariously calls out the fact that Mortal Kombat 3, which was released almost 30 years ago in 1995, features a portal that looks suspiciously like the first-ever photo of a black hole.

The first photo of a black hole was taken by the Event Horizon Telescope, and the black hole in question sits at the center of the galaxy Messier 87. However, the strange thing about it is that the photo was taken as recently as 2019, meaning that the MK3 portal isn't based on the black hole photo and is completely original. And maybe Boon and Groening are using the same time travel machine.

Champions Are Nothing Compared To Demi-Gods

Beating any Mortal Kombat game is an achievement in itself, especially given that the games have a high difficulty level. And if players complete them with low-ranking playable characters and become champions, that commands respect. However, ranking up to "Champion" is as basic as it comes when it comes to gamers who are at the Demi-God level.

The meme brilliantly depicts the difference between the skills of the two kinds of players with Mel Gibson directing a man dressed as Jesus Christ. Gibson quickly became a controversial director by making The Passion of the Christ, and telling Jesus how it's done hilariously reflects the unearned confidence of a "Champion" Mortal Kombat player.

The Best Spin-Off

Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks isn't the only spin-off video game the franchise has spawned. It was the third attempt at a spin-off following 1997's Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero and 2000's Mortal Kombat: Special Forces.

It's a perfect example of "third-time lucky," as Sub-Zero was slammed by critics, and Special Forces is often referred to as one of the worst games of all time. It sounds like a documentary about the making of Special Forces would be endlessly entertaining, as Ed Boon tweeted, "The game & project were riddled with all kinds of problems. I could write a book on that" (via Twitter).

They Who Have The Mortal Kombat 12 Leaks

While there have been plenty of leaks and announcements about the highly anticipated Mortal Kombat 12, there haven't been any official announcements yet. The game is constantly being teased by developers and industry insiders, and it's almost as if they have fans eating out of the palm of their hands.

Based on the way gamers respond to the slightest bit of MK12 news, it makes people feel powerful. Whether it's reports of it being a reboot or Kai rumored return to Mortal Kombat, anybody with the tiniest bit of insight on the upcoming game will be looked at as a Demi-God themselves.

No NetherRealm Studios Game For 84 Years

NRS stands for NetherRealm Studios, the very game developer that makes the Mortal Kombat games. And being made by another impatient fan of the series, this meme hilariously draws attention to how long players have to wait for another release from the developer with a Titanic meme.

It even seems like fans will get a Mortal Kombat role-playing game before a proper franchise sequel, as the mobile RPG Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is scheduled for release in 2023. And while it might be an entertaining game to fill the time on commutes, it's hardly the exciting console game that fans have been waiting years for.

The Hybrid Dragon Race

The meme is referring to how the Red Dragon clan, Daegon, and Reptile worked together to create a human-dragon hybrid race. They were successful, and the hybrid dragons became the typical expendable henchmen of Mortal Kombat: Deception.

However, it wasn't exactly the dragons who wanted their genes used, as the dragon guardian Caro was used against its will. If anything, it was the humans who wanted it, as the Red Dragon clan wanted to be turned into dragons. But the dragon did get its revenge, as Caro breathed fire on all the hybrid dragons and killed the whole of the Red Dragon clan.

The Quantumania Similarities

With the newly released trailer for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, fans were quick to compare the new colorful outfits to Spy Kids 3D. And while they do bare some similarities this name has drawn another comparison. This time, the new Marvel Cinematic Universe movie has been compared to Mortal Kombat.

The look of the Quantumania poster and the three Mortal Kombat characters is almost uncanny, and there must be some fan who works in the offices of Marvel Studios, as it must be more than just a coincidence. But it's unfortunately unlikely that fans will see any fatality-inspired fight scenes in the MCU any time soon.
